  • Fantastic! It has probably been more than sixty years since I last tied a fly, but I could still feel the weight of the bobbin and the texture of the chenille.

  • Nailed the reasoning for this. If you think this is getting artful man you should go watch the big saltwater fly tiers. You will want to go get down with it

Love watching you try to do this lol, I’ve never been better than you at anything fishing related but this. 😆 Most of my crappie are on hand tied jigs these days. Feathers and fur move so much better in water than plastic. I’m surprised you don’t fly fish and your actually but I guess Texas doesn’t have a lot of trout fisheries haha. Should get some bass on the fly though. Loads of fun

  • I must say that you brought a smile to my face and a chuckle to my heart. The hook end goes in the vice which many have already informed you. The greatest thing about tying flies is that almost anything can be used to tie a fly. Another great thing about tying flies is that you can catch any fish on a fly, something that you created. I enjoy your show and your beautiful family. May the Good Lord richly bless you!

  • Much easier to put the hook in the vice and lay materials on top also if you wrap your thread on the hook before adding any materials(feathers, hair, etc....) makes it alot easier. One of the torture devices in your box is called a whip finish lots of vids on youtube on how to use makes for a much stronger and longer lasting knot. • Also don’t get discouraged by the comments, the first fly I tied was with sewing thread a bait hook and feathers I found.. lmao it also looked terrible didn’t float well (it was modeled after a elk hair caddis) and the wraps were not neat by any means. But I caught a large mouth on it for some strange reason and took to researching fly tying.. lol

  • I been tying flies for about a year, like every other hobby I kinda nerd out on it until I’ve consumed all the info I can. It would be very awesome to see your journey with fly tying if that’s something you want to do. Next time start your treading on the hook, apply some tying adhesive then apply your materials for more durability and fuller body. There’s a system to tying, once you figure it out it’s addictive.. I’d check out @madriveroutfitters

  • Nice, I do fly tying and lure making myself. You're supposed put the hook point part of the hook, in the vice, with the hook shank on top, and hook eye pointing away from the vice. This way, you tie off at the hook eye end of the hook, and it's easier than trying to do half hitches over the materials you tied in. Before you tie feathers in, you wrap a layer of thread on the hook shank first. This way it locks the materials in better when you tie them in. When you do half hitches, wrap them around the hook multiple times before you cinch them down. And after you clip the thread when you tie off, put a little super glue or head cement on the knot, or where you tied off. That way the fly/jig/dressing will last you longer, and be more durable. You don't need special expensive hooks for basic beginner fly tying either. You can go get some cheap aberdeen or bait holders from walmart that should do the trick. I like to take a hole punch, and punch out little round disk like pieces from foam sheets, stack them and glue them together, and use them as little popper fly bodies. Cheap and effective, and can be found at walmart. I do like to use kink shank hooks for those though,as the bends in the hook will stop the hook from turning in the popper body, but one could still manage with an aberdeen hook. I hope you saved more feathers from that wood duck. Look into getting some marabou feathers. That's what people use for crappie jigs. Good luck dude! It's a thrill catching fish on things that I build here at my desk. I like to use my homemade things often. I think you should look into building inline spinners. I love making them, and they are fairly easy to build.

  • feeder. You like Wood Duck feathers you will love Turkey and Pheasant feathers. I've tied more flies with Turkey and Pheasant feathers than any other. I'm sure others have said it however, turn your jig around so the hook is in the vise with the point on the bottom. Have the jig sit parallel to the bench. Some tip the hook or jig either up or down slightly. It's all personal preference and what makes it easier. Best of luck tying. I've been doing it for over 25 yrs and am still learning tricks and new techniques.

  • I really enjoyed this video. If you go to fly fishing supplier websites you may find some of them that request hunters to sell feather's or fur to them to use in fly production. I remember years ago one company bought Squirrel tails to resell on their site. You do such a great job and I hope you have many years to keep up the great job you do. So keep on living your dreams

  • My grandfather got me into fly fishing and tying my own flies when I was a kid and I loved it but I haven’t done it in years so I’m in no way a professional but the way I was taught was to put bend of the hook in the vice and that’ll make it easier to start the string and tie your half hitches. My absolute favorite fly to tie was the deer hair bass bug. I never fished them much but they were a lot of fun to tie and they’re challenging, it really helps build your skills at tying flies, or at least it really helped me.
