My First Time Trapping (Caught the Wrong Animal)

This is my first time trapping using paw traps. I am trying to catch a bobcat that has been lurking around my chicken coop and has already taken one chicken. I'm hoping setting these paw traps will help me catch the bobcat when I'm not looking.

  • So basically what your gonna wanna do is take notes of the paths the cat takes ( which you've done ) , on that path where your gonna be setting that Trap you want to grab some sticks & on both sides stick them in the ground standing straight up making kinda like a wall on both sides of the path & the trap ( making a Funnel that cat HAS to walk through & not around ) in a couple areas near a tree , thick brush ect ect . (Think of it this way its like that Hog trap you got there you drop the food in the back using the cage to funnel the animal to the back in order to step on a plate same concept) , Dig a round hole the size of the trap just a couple inches ( not much ) just enough so its almost flush with the ground, a little above . Cover the traps exactly the way you did in the video . Then go online & get your self a Bobcat scent lure . Pretty much like a Deer lure , then spray it in & around the area . Or buy a Raw chicken to use as bait since its after chicken , it knows the smell & taste since its ready gotten one or 2 already . Then just sit & wait my friend & you'll have your self one hell of beautiful cat to send to your Taxidermist to have mounted or skin it out Tan the hide with some Borax rub it in all nice & good wait for it to dry ... Best of Luck LakeforkGuy . Even if you've gotten your cay by this point . These tips will definitely help out if you ever wanna trap again . Now Snares are bit bit tricky, but you wanna build a stick wall like with the Paw Traps but leave an opening the size of the snare & large enough for the animal to easily walk through without wanting to try to find another path around. Snares are a bit Hit or miss but are definitely effective if there's established paths the Cat or Animal is "Consistently" taking

  • Dirt hole set! Go to the base of a tree near the trail the cat takes! Dig a hole at about 45 degrees towards the base of the tree and make it about 3-4 inches deep so the cat can’t come on the backside of the trap. Use just ground beef and eggs mixed and shove into the bottom of the hole. Put your trap about 4-5 inches in front of the hole and cover it! That’s how I catch my coyotes here in Ohio and I’ve caught many bobcats that way in those same sets! Also dig a bed for your trap so it is flat with the ground!

  • The feather or a wing "dangling" over the trap or causing the critter to cross the trap to investigate as mentioned below is a great technique. And another dangling opportunity. The painting initially got my attention but as mentioned by others after some time the smell will fade. A semi urban cat like that one is probably use to human smells on stuff and not as put off or alerted to it as a truly wilderness bound cat. But the more you can keep your human stink off, the better. You may also want to look into what's called a dirt hole set. You Dig a hole oh about 2-3 inches in diameter down and back. Ends up looking like a golfer hole or the like. You use something to press or smear some stinky stuff/attractant in the back and on the roof of your hole so it takes some real investigating by the critter. Place your trap in front below the surface. In a created depression the size or slightly larger than the set trap. Place the trap in the space. Lay a cloth or something that that will drape the pan (Trigger, paw placement deal) of the trap. This way nothing works its way under while sifting a little dirt over it. Taking care not to place that drape in a way that will interfere with the jaws or the pan. Sift dirt over it. Then carefully and gently make a low spot about the size of a paw, in the dirt on the pan, with a stick or something, of course not pushing hard enough to set the trap off. Critters as mentioned in a previous comment tend to step-in a low spot or perceived established previous path of paw placement. Looks tested. This is a highly affective approach for fox and coyote and other incidental catches. I use to mist with Coyote or fox urine (To also mask any scent I may have left.) and then stream spay a spot that looks like a natural target. All creating a scene like a previous critter may have buried something and then scent marked it. Its a whole lot of stimulus going on to distract from the potential trap discovery and avoidance. Critters are smart as you know. Its also always good to place them in a tight spot or pinch point I guess you could call it, so there approach is dictated for them. Sticks and stones deterring stepping and encouraging stepping in other spots is good to. Just subtle little sticks and small unstable or noise making things. They'd prefer to sneak on quiet ground verses step on a jolly rancher wrapper for example. I will expect to see follow up success's. Snares also affective but not allowed is some areas. Make sure you find out. Especially before posting a video. One of the reasons being roaming pets. You can't undo it. A leg hold gives you an option to free and reset. Snare. Not so much.

  • As a licensed Nuisance Wildlife Control Operator (in Southeast Oklahoma), and fur trapper, I'll say the following. Folks have already given you some decent advice. I would just come show you...but in consideration of our current environment, I don't suppose that would be a viable option. Here are my four top suggestions for cats: 1. Bed the trap. Make sure the trap doesn't move when you touch the jaws and/or levers, after set. 2. Scent control. Boil the traps, then don't handle them without clean...ish gloves. 3. Fencing/Blocking. You can use sticks and rocks to make the cat put its paw on the pan. Cats can be fenced, guided and blocked pretty hard. 4. Feather. Hang a light colored feather high above the trap. Cats hunt more on sight than smell. P.S. Don't put scents on the trap itself. You want the animal focused on something else, or nothing at all. I would love to come help you out sometime in the future. The family and I watch your channels all the time.

  • Iv trapped a few lynx (yes they are different from a bobcat but same principals should apply) for them I use 1/16 snairs that are 5’ long with 1 swivel at the end where I anchor off at. I set them with a 10 inch loop 10 inches off the ground (from the bottom of the loop)with a chin lifter ( small twig about the size of a pencil led and about 9 inches long placed at an angle under the snair). Leg holds I like to find a thick bunch of brush and make a few trails leading up to it and place the legholde along the trails I made ( also works with snairs) or what might be easer for your back yard is doing dirt hole sets. Note: New traps should be degreased and dyed. And spray paint will leave sent on your traps That will make the animals wary. For my new traps I soak them in a 2:1 saltwater to vinegar mix for 24 hrs and then boil them for 5 min. Then let them air dry outside.
