Our adventure truck is down again with another issue. My Chevrolet silverado 1500 duramax has the check engine light on and after one trip to the dealership, it's on again!

  • I have the gmc version and my engine light comes on. My fans never come on like that and it’s been almost 100 degrees here for about 3 months. My dealership can’t get me in for almost a week. So my light usually goes off the day before my appointment and they won’t take it in if the light is off. Very frustrating.

  • Took my GMC in for the same problem, I received two codes the first was P20F8 and second code ECM code P200A. See ECM. They are currently replacing the intake manifold. They are saying it’s becoming a problem for right now.

  • Several scenarios why I bought the Duramax 3.0 : Many say just go out and buy a the 2020 HD Diesel or HD gas, The 2020 HD Diesel comparable model costs over 60k before tax' s and etc, I paid $45K plus tax's if on sale. That is $15 K difference on a HD diesel vs the 3.0 Diesel. The 6.2 Gas engine comparable model is 10K or more as well If remembering correctly. The reason I took the chance on the 3.0 Duramax was because of the MPG and I tow under 10,000 pounds and the price difference vs the other choices vs the 5.3 L engine. I really love that you can drive over 700 miles plus on a road trip without stopping for diesel. I have really become comfortable after driving the truck over 150 hours per the truck computer. I am not a fan of the DEF, but not a deal killer. My mechanic friend said to put exact OIL GM mandates. Only GM stocks the oil at this time per my friend, a very specific oil. Not the same oil at the store, if the numbers match, not the same GM oil, GM added another ingredient, note the after the oil numbers I think. I can't explain technically, but buy the Diesel Duramax 3.0 OIL from GM or warranty or engine could be problematic. I will assume other choices for the oil will be produced for the Duramax 3.0 oil in the future, but until then, I would not play games and buy the exact oil at the Dealership.

  • I purchased my 2020 Chevy LTZ 4WD Duramax 3.0 in February 2020 for $45k (msrp of $57K), a great deal in theory, selling my 2001 Tahoe prior. So far so good to 6,000 miles in 6 months after 3 long road trips with zero issues. However, The Owners Manual caught me off guard the night before my first road trip, there are many surprises regarding the Diesel engines if you read the manual. How many of you all did this recommendation, could be one of the keys, break in Diesel slow and easy ??????? Sorry for the long comment, I like to write. Owner manual stresses the following rule, not verbatim: I discovered the strict recommendation the night before my first road trip in February 2020 . I recall the manual states not to drive over 50 mph for the first 500 miles. I thought, oh crap how am I gonna drive that slow for 400 plus miles to reach 500 miles. I drove between 45 and 60 mph for another 400 miles, the slowest/longest 700 miles I have ever experienced. Positives: Truck has a lot of power to pass, drove over 5 hours without stopping 4 times over 3 road trips (all personal records and I am over 50). I Tested out urinating while driving highway speeds on the my 3rd 5 hour plus non-stop driving, don't try, LMAO. Truck does great off road too, drove over 60 miles dominating the rough high elevation (up to 10,000 feet) on a DIRT road in the mountains, started to slide around corners at high speed, then changed to AWD, truck hugged the rough dirt road at high speeds, passing other cars that couldn't navigate the awful roads. To help reduce HEAT: I like to open the hood after driving both in my 2016 5.0 Mustang and my new Diesel truck. Why not dissipate the heat as quick as possible, seems to cool the engine off quickly, easy solution and no harm done. A Mechanic friend told me to not change the oil until I am down to almost zero oil engine percentage left, I am at 6,000 miles with 28 percent to go. My common sense tells me to change the oil asap. I have pushed the truck hard at times, but the truck can handle high speeds/engine running for over 10 hours straight without stopping, but once to get gas/urinate. Remember the 3 long road trips of almost 1800 miles each, the highway driving probably not as hard as city driving, but I drove the Diesel like a gas engine. I have pulled a 7,5000 load at least 10 times on a 7 mile roundtrip to lake. LIKE I SAID NO ISSUES, THANKFULLY !...........................I hate buying a first year anthing as well, or going to a new restaurant. Hope this ends well. UGH........

  • I have a 2020 RST 3.0 and after DEF calibrate started having Check Engine come on with unk code. While towing my trailer with maybe total 5k pounds check engine light came on after having a quick check while 1k miles into a 3K trip. Dealer said 7 errors came up and big item was intake manifold needed to be replaced. I had maybe 10K miles. I don’t want a lemon for a new truck for that money...did Chevy help out or was it all dealer?

  • Probably not your issue, but if you plug in the engine block heater on the LM2 when the temp is not below freezing, the software will turn the fans on max because the engine coolant gets hot but the outside temp is not low enough (truck thinks it’s overheating). The fans will not reset until after the truck sits off for at least 30 minutes. I found this out when I plugged in the truck overnight when it was expected to freeze but didn’t. There is a software update that addresses this. That said, haven’t had any issues.... love my Sierra AT4 with the LM2

    • tom cocci there have been more horrible reviews and GM quality is ATTROCIOUS. However, the engine will be just as good as a Cummins when they get the bugs worked out. A GM representative even called me yesterday about a survey I filled out and was asking me about my issues and what can they do to make the situation better. So far, they're the ONLY company that has done that.

  • The issue with modern diesels isn't so much the motor itself but the emission control crap on it. From the DEF sensors and pumps to EGRs and their sensors and the DPF they're always giving problems in that respect. If people use trucks like this for work they can't afford the downtime so even though the costs for the repairs will be covered the business costs will be an issue. At this point I'd get a simple gasser motor and eat the extra fuel costs because that at the least gets me to my next job versus the dealership service area.

  • It’s regening. It’s doing what it’s supposed too. The engine is putting itself under load and creating a ton of heat. Exhaust can get up to 1100 degrees under regen. Thank the EPA for ruining diesels forever

  • A brand new truck and you have to put up with that bull shit. I would take it in for the prescribed number of times under the lemon law for your state and get your money back. I've been watching Scotty Kilmer channel, he says to stay away from Chevrolet/GMC and Dodge/Ram vehicles because of their poor quality. Even Ford has issues with their turbo engines, their natural aspirated engines according to Scotty are fine. Toyota truck mileage may be bad but they will always get you there and back home. I'm turning 68 and I figured out about eight years ago to buy Toyota. I buy used, and I have been extremely pleased with Toyota.

  • They don't want to fix it. Trade it . It shouldn't be doing that. I don't know much about the smaller diesels, but for 2020 I heard chevy is taking the diesel out of the canyon. A nice half ton 5.3 gas should work for you. if you get another diesel. get a 3/4, then you have an option of a 6.0 gas ,6.6 gas, or a 464 diesel. Your truck sounds like it's in Regen mode. Your truck will have a slight higher idle in park, or it can regenerate as your going down the highway, without the check engine light on.

  • I own a 2020 RST duramax. 5500 miles n been ok to me so far “knock on wood.” Even with the thought of the wet oil pump belt. I’m being optimistic with this straight 6 n loving it to this point. Ford dodge or Toyota.... every1 has their preference but I’m also a tundra owner n the 1st model (2007) @260,000 n still running strong with air intake pump replacement yrs ago n now the starter. Issues will arise but dont knock it just yet.

  • Do yourself a favor, all new diesel owners: Get you an Edge CTS2/CTS3. It's an engine/transmission computer monitor. You can access virtually every sensor on the truck. It'll read and clear codes. BUT most importantly, you can tell your truck to manually regen the emissions system in 2 options- either while you drive, or it will high idle until it's finished. You're welcome.

  • Everyone talks shit about new diesels and half of you never even owned a diesel. People buy them and drive in cities more than on the highway and wonder why there are DPF issues. You need to drive both highway and city equally and shouldn't have regen issues. I've had 2 canyon 2.8's now and the most I've ever had was a failed DPF sensor; which a ECU update fixed.

  • You have brand brand new truck with a new engine - it’s common that there are some minor issues. I have a 2018 Canyon Diesel and I’ve had some check engine light on and checked the computer code and it was an issue with communication issue, the dealer reflashed it’s gone, and also had a recall for the DEF system. Since getting it serviced it’s been a lot better! I’ve also heard that trucks made in Mexico vs the USA have a lot more issues with electrical gremlins because the connections are apparently not clicked in as positive.....this is coming from a former GM assembly line trainer.

  • Under no circumstances would I buy a new diesel. The aftertreatment systems are nothing but problems, not to mention expensive as all hell to fix.

  • Trade it in for the 5.3, 6.2 gassers. Just go ahead and buck up to a 2500 6.6 duramax you’ll be set.
